And the Dish Ran Away With the Spoon

    Wednesday, May 23, 2007

When we’ve been on our family vacations, we’ve found it much easier to tote our own meal set when heading to restaurants or even when ordering in room service. We noticed that the majority of the time, kids meals were served using adult dinnerware and flatware; if we were lucky, we got one of those plastic juice cups but that was it. While we’ve slowly begun easing dear daughter into using the breakables – boosting her “big girl” confidence – in the early days of traveling it saved us a lot of worry to have our own set of unbreakables, particularly when she was waving her utensils around madly and knocking everything over.

Today’s kids’ dining sets are designed to be just as fashionable as children’s clothing, which we highly appreciate; we needn’t head out to dinner at a nice restaurant and grace the table with an Elmo plate. The sets below may not match a restaurant’s place setting exactly, but they’re dignified enough to be used outside while preserving your peace of mind.

    French Bull Kids Dining Set

The nicely unisex and extremely hip set is from French Bull; available from babysoy for $24

    Links Melamine Set

Another set for the mod squad: the Links 6-piece dining set which includes 2 trays, a bowl and glass and a fork and spoon; the small tray can serve double duty as a plate; available from Wrapables for $19.99

    Naota Dining Set

This dinner set, designed by Naoto Fukasawa includes a full set of utensils, cup, plate, bowl, mini-sake cup (just kidding, but it does look like one) and tray, and also comes in orange; available from Unica Home for $69

    Alessi Dining Set

Designed by alessibambino, this set’s clear simplicity ensures inconspicuous dining at even the best restaurant: only the neat coaster and placemat are colored in a kaleidoscopic print. Also at Unica Home, for $87

    Tre Bimbi Puppet Club Set

Your child may stay entertained through the meal with the puppet people on Tre Bimbi’s set, which includes an egg cup that can double as a dipping station; available from Modern Seed in green with red flatware, red with green, blue with orange and orange with blue for $45
