Armchair Travel via The Travel Book
Thursday, May 17, 2007One of our favorite books is Lonely Planet’s The Travel Book, a hefty coffee table book that we actually look at time and time again. As it promises, it takes you on a journey to every country in the world – a wonderfully fascinating pictorial journey to remote lands as well as those more well-traveled. Not only does looking through here provide us with constant inspiration for our own travels, but our daughter is fascinated with it as well – looking at the pictures showcasing different dress, foods and ways of life inevitably prompts a flurry of questions about the people and scenes in the pictures. Which is wonderful, as it’s the precursor to the type of person we want her to be: curious, questioning, and not afraid to see and do new things.
If you’d like to consider some new destinations for your next vacation, this book is even better than the old “close-your-eyes-and-stick-a-pin-in-a-map” routine. The blurbs for each country include suggested reading, the best times to visit, and must-see sites. But even if you’re not ready to give up your usual itinerary just yet, you and the children can explore in the comfort of your own home – an inexpensive way to take a fascinating journey around the world.
