No, I’m Not Smarter Than A Fifth-Grader…
Wednesday, May 23, 2007Quick, who’s the current leader of Paraguay?
Have no idea? Don’t fret – we don’t either. Which is why when we saw a post on Gadling about this book for the geographically challenged – which would be what, most of the United States? – we read on with gusto. After all, when you go on these family vacations, it would be nice to know just a little bit more than how far your hotel is from the aquarium and “Where’s the bathroom?” in the native tongue, yes? We thought so too…
Published by National Geographic for children ages 8 to 14, Afghanistan to Zimbabwe offers nice tidbits of info about all 192 countries around the world: current leaders, currency, language spoken, etc. It was published in 2005 so some of the political info has surely changed by now, but on the whole you’ll be far more educated about people and terrain outside of this country than you were before, which is why this book is a good bet for the over-14 crowd (meaning you) as well as the kids. And if realizing how much you don’t know isn’t humbling enough, know this: the book was written by the 2004 winner of the National Geographic Bee, Andrew Wojtanik, who was in 8th grade when he won.

$12.95, available at National Geographic
