Travel Games For Tots to Teens
Tuesday, December 11, 2007If you’re still stumped for stocking stuffers – or just need some new items for your travel game stash – the following ideas should provide you and your kids with new ways to stay entertained.
Remember Rubik’s Cube? This Sudoku Cube has a new twist: it combines the old-school challenge with the more recent Sudoku craze. Recommended for kids 6-11. $9.95 at Barnes & Noble
Would You Rather is a fun, fascinating game that we’ve all played at one time or another. The game has a series of cards posing interesting dilemmas, like would you rather have five bottles stuck on five fingers for a year or a bucket stuck on your foot for a year? 12 to adult. $9.99 at Amazon
If you’re tired of uppity Mensa-type games, try duh. You know how annoyed you get when you forget something that’s everyday common knowledge? That’s what duh takes advantage of, with its 50 simple questions that we all know the answers to. Or at least, we do until we’re quizzed on them… 12 to adult. $11.99 at Target.com
Created by a mother who was probably at wit’s end, award-winning Namits is a simple yet thought-provoking game for kids and adults. Combine the cards (see example at right) to come up with lists of things to name. You can add in time limits or first to reach a certain number to make the game more competitive and challenging, or keep it simple for tots who haven’t quite mastered the art of losing yet… The original game is for ages 4 to 100; snag a travel set for car trips or the Junior game for kids 3 to 8. $9.99 each at Namits.

The Brainquest card series make for long-lasting entertainment; several of these have been tested over here with not a loser in the bunch. Even non-readers can get a kick out of these: the sets, which consist of about 150 bookmarker-sized bound cards, begin with several options for toddlers and preK’ers, while older kids up to grade 7 can tackle more advanced math, reading, and specialized topics such as Black History or the Presidents – and yes, one for travel too. $10.95 at Brainquest.com
