The Cultural Explorer, a tour operator specializing in culturally authentic and philanthropic trips throughout South Africa, has created a unique Mothers & Daughters – African Adventure tour that focuses on women’s experiences and triumphs. This special itinerary, with stays promised at boutique properties and luxury coastal hotels similar to those pictured above, includes visits with South African women like a traditional healer and entrepreneurs who are working to make a difference in their communities, and offers travelers the opportunity to work with several organizations themselves.

The 14-day trip starts in Johannesburg with visits to Soweto and the Apartheid Museum. A 2-day stop at an eco-safari comes midway through the trip, with journeys to Durban and Cape Town following. Along the way, women will have a chance to learn about the Bushmen in the Drakensberg mountains and make a visit to a small Zulu village.

Although the journey features thought-provoking stops like the trip to Robben Island (site of Nelson Mandela’s long captivity), there will also be plenty of time for massages, shopping, walks and exercise, and tours of art galleries. Clearly the hope is that the access to an authentic South Africa from a female perspective will provide mothers and their teen or adult daughters the chance to explore the bonds they share with each other, and with women around the world.

The itinerary is offered for adult women and will be offered twice in 2008: May 3 to 17 and June 7 to 21. The rate is $4,599 per person and includes all hotels, all group ground transportation including airport transfers, all entrance fees, all safari costs, certain meals, and driver/guide expenses (except tips).
