    France Becomes Friendlier to Your Lungs

    While the vision of smoke-filled cafes and bistros has always seemed, well, romantic, the reality of wading through all that smoke can be a bit trying. For one, there’s the way smoke just clings to your clothes. What it does to your lungs is even worse, and not too many of us want to inflict that on our children. As of January 1st, however, France has instituted a nationwide ban on smoking in cafes, restaurants and bars. For those with kids (and even many without), the ban will be a welcome change. Now the only thing hazardous about eating in France will be the danger of eating too much…

    When we’ve been on our family vacations, we’ve found it much easier to tote our own meal set when heading to restaurants or even when ordering in room service. We noticed that the majority of the time, kids meals were served using adult dinnerware and flatware; if we were lucky, we got one of those plastic juice cups but that was it. While we’ve slowly begun easing dear daughter into using the breakables – boosting her “big girl” confidence – in the early days of traveling it saved us a lot of worry to have our own set of unbreakables, particularly when she was waving her utensils around madly and knocking everything over.

    Today’s kids’ dining sets are designed to be just as fashionable as children’s clothing, which we highly appreciate; we needn’t head out to dinner at a nice restaurant and grace the table with an Elmo plate. The sets below may not match a restaurant’s place setting exactly, but they’re dignified enough to be used outside while preserving your peace of mind.
